Foundation issues challenge grant

NHS plans to break ground on modern new shelter this fall

The Chardonnay Foundation has announced a $200,000 Challenge Grant in support of Nassau Humane Society's Capital Campaign to build a new 11,000- square- foot animal shelter and adoption center.

The Challenge Grant will run through October 31, matching donations made to the campaign. This gift is a continuation of the Chardonnay Foundation's long and generous history of supporting Nassau Humane Society.

"As longtime supporters of Nassau Humane Society since we moved here in 2005, we felt a genuine need to put the Capital Campaign in a position to start the actual construction of the rescue center." said Pat and David Smith on behalf of the Chardonnay Foundation. They continued, "With the economy slowly improving, which is a good thing, that fact also brings rising construction costs and higher interest rates to the entire project the longer it is delayed. Contracts need to be signed and interest rates locked down as soon as possible. We sincerely encourage the community to participate in this matching incentive program. Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island will have a modern and professionally managed shelter that will be a model to others. Everyone will enjoy the benefits and most importantly so will the thousands and thousand of animals that will be saved and helped to find their forever homes with loving and caring owners."

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Nassau Humane Society to raise significant funds for our new shelter," said Nassau Humane Society Executive Director Brandy Carvalho. "For anyone who has not contributed yet, or is able to contribute again, now is the time. Your contribution will make double the impact. $1 turns into $2 and $1,000 turns into $2,000. Support from our community, combined with the generosity of The Chardonnay Foundation, will ensure that we can break ground this fall on the newly designated Chardonnay Foundation Animal Rescue Center." The new Nassau Humane Society shelter will increase capacity for care of animals, meeting modern animal rescue standards and best practices. The homeless animals will be in a safe, warm and comfortable environment wile they are waiting for their forever homes. Last fiscal year, Nassau Humane Society, a no-kill animal shelter, celebrated more than 500 adoptions.

So far $1,200,000 has been raise for the $2 million capital campaign. The funds raised through the Chardonnay Foundation Challenge Grant will provide the resources needed to break ground on the new shelter. Fundraising will continue throughout the construction process.
