I guess my story fits into the old "one night of pleasure" scenario. My mother didn't tell me about handsome strangers, and my human parents neglected to have me spayed, so I found myself pregnant. My former owners did not want me " in my condition" and dumped me out in the country where I tried to fend for myself. I was wandering around homeless and very discouraged when a nice man who said he was the Animal Control Officer picked me up and took me to the little Nassau Humane Society Shelter out near the airport. Because I was pregnant, I heard someone say that I was very fortunate to be taken toa place where my puppies and I would be cared for because most animal shelters euthanise dogs in my condition. Now, I had no idea what that meant, but I do know that I didn't mean to bring any more homeless puppies into the world and I hoped that someone would help me through this crisis.
The wonderful manager of the little shelter on Amelia Island, Aunt Lynda, gave me a big hug and led me to a nice private room with a big soft bed where I could rest my back (all of you who have had children can relate to that). Another helper, Dee, took me out into the sunshine and rubbed my very bulging tummy and told me that someone would help deliver my puppies and I would be safe and sound. She said although I was very tired, I certainly did not want to be "put to sleep". She assured me that the Society does not punish pregnant dogs that way for their mistakes.
Now I have 9 darling little puppies that I love dearly. I must admit, however, they are wearing me out. One of the members of the Society has donated money to sponsor all my puppies and care for my little family until they are old enough to have their own homes. Soon enough, I will get my figure back and be spayed so I can join a new family where I will be loved and forgiven for that wild night of passion.
