The cattery supported by the Nassau Humane Society at 639 Airport Road is expected to be closed for about two weeks after ringworm was identified in a few of the cats. Ringworm is a contagious but treatable infection of the skin.
The three affected cats are being treated, following protocols recommended by consulting veterinarians.
Cats who were housed in other areas of the shelter and not potentially exposed will still be available for adoption, said Tom Christenson, executive director of NHS. A cat adoption room has been set up where the public can view the available cats.
Updates will be posted on the NHS website, nassauhumanesociety.com, along with information on cats that are currently available.
