SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Pet Therapy
As part of our community outreach program, volunteers will accompany NHS pets to visit with residents of assisted living and other types of care facilities. Times and dates may be scheduled on a regular basis or whenever it is convenient. Only residents interested in visiting with our pets would be involved. Contact the shelter at 321-1647 if you would like to participate or need more information.
CITY OF FERNANDINA
BEACH
ANIMAL CONTROL
The City of Fernandina Beach has permitted the Nassau Humane Society to operate its Adoption Center out of the City's Animal Control facility. We feel that animal control is much more than enforcing the animal control laws of the city, which include but are not limited to the leash law, animal restraint and the licensing of pets. Our Animal Control Officer will work with pet owners and the community in an education process on responsible pet ownership.
Upon entering the shelter, an animal is held for 5 business days in the stray area to allow the owner to reclaim the pet. The City of Fernandina Beach pays for the care of these animals during this 5 day period.
The Nassau Humane Society operates a lost and found shelter for the City and is located at 671 Airport Road, Fernandina Beach, Florida 32034. The hours of operation for animal intake and reclaim are:
Monday-Friday 11:30AM - 5:00PM
After hour emergency services, defined as an animal bite to a human, vicious or injured animal, are provided.
All pet owners within the City limits are required to license their pets. To obtain a city license, proof of current rabies certificate administered by a veterinarian must be furnished. The cost for a city license is $5.00 for a sterilized pet and $23.00 for a non-sterilized pet. Verification of sterilization is required. The license will provide very valuable assistance if the pet becomes lost.
NASSAU HUMANE
SOCIETY
ADOPTION CENTER
The City of Fernandina Beach has permitted the Nassau Humane Society to operate its Adoption Center out of the City's Animal Control facility. Upon entering the shelter, an animal is held for 5 business days in the stray area to allow the owner to reclaim the pet. On the 6th day, at the expense of NHS, the pet is put through a series of tests to determine if it is a candidate for adoption. These tests include Heartworm, FIV, Feluk, and temperament testing. Healthy, behaviorally sound animals are then placed into the Adoption Program. All animals in the Adoption program are sterilized, made current on vaccinations including rabies, wormed, treated for fleas, and dogs are started on heartworm prevention. When funding and space is available, NHS will address illnesses such as heartworm, mange, and upper respiratory, thanks to the efforts of our local veterinarians. NHS assumes all costs from this point until adoption.
The Nassau Humane Society's Adoption Center operation is funded solely by donations and run by a small staff with the help of volunteers. Your support and financial help is greatly appreciated.
The Adoption Center is open for adoptions 7 days a week, during the following hours:
Monday-Friday 11:30AM - 5PM
Saturday 11:00AM - 4PM
Sunday 1:00PM - 3PM
Please stop by the shelter during these hours. We will open by appointment if these hours do not allow a potential adopter to visit. Our animals may also be viewed online at petfinder.com.
The Nassau Humane Society welcomes your financial support; however, donations of your time and love are equally valued and appreciated. To become a volunteer, please call 904-321-1647 and speak with Beth.
